This hymn, a powerful Mantra extolling Surya or the Sun, who is the supreme Lord of the Universe and the god above all gods, was revealed by the revered sage Agastya to Lord Rama on the battlefield before his encounter with Ravana.

Significance of this hymn:

 <li>According to the "Phalashruti" section within the 31 verses, Sage Agastya conveys:</li>
 <ul>
 <li>"Oh Rama! Any individual who sings praises to Surya in times of great distress, adversity, lost in unfamiliar territories, or when overwhelmed by fear, shall not falter."</li>
 <li>"By worshipping this universal Lord, the supreme among deities, with unwavering focus and devotion through thrice chanting this hymn, victory shall be attained in battles."</li>
 </ul>
</ul>

The belief stands that reciting this hymn continuously for 48 days (one mandal) fulfills the reader's aspirations.

The eminent Sage Parasara in his work 'Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra' prescribes recitation of this hymn for alleviating hardships or malevolent influences caused by Surya Graha (Sun planet) as per Vedic Astrology.
